After experiencing the last frontier in Anchorage, Alaska I don't know if I loved it for jolting me around for the week that I was there or hated it for jolting me around. My body hates me. That's one thing I know because the day I arrived (Friday, October 9th) I had been up since 3am for work in Ohio then jet setted off to Anchorage, AK and was up a total of 24 hours. WOW!
The next day my coworker and I woke up early on Saturday to sight see and drive along the Seward Highway which is about a 40 minute drive south from Anchorage to check out Portage Glacier. It was a bit rainy and foggy but the views and mountains were breathtaking.
No picture really depicts the high definition and beauty of the mountains! We spotted some swans in Potters Marsh and a couple of Bald Eagles chilling out on some dead trees. After all of this adventure and nature, we headed to work to close the Target Cafe and then party the night away! But before we even made it back to our hotel room, what did we see in the dark noshing on some grass?! MOOSE!!!! WE SAW MOOSE! 3 MOOSES just hanging out by the road in a neighborhood! Now that's nature! When in Rome...
Bad idea to think your body does not need rest. I should know this by now, right?! Well I needed a day of recovery to work my 12 hour days for the new store opening! What a successful opening it was, I tell ya! Such a beautiful store all shiny and new! And tons of guests who just couldn't get enough breadsticks and pizza at the Target Cafe where I was giving support help for the grand opening. You would have thought that these Alaskans had never had Pizza Hut pizza before...there are several Pizza Hut establishments throughout the Anchorage area by the way!
Some other things I saw in the last frontier were various little espresso huts in random parking lots. Apparently the food safety codes are rather lenient so anybody can open up a little cafe wherever they well please. I also saw a lot of SUVs, beef jerky of every flavor, Dansko shoes (patten leather clogs that all the ladies were stylin'), Ulu knife shops, liquor stores, and a diverse culture of people from all over the world.
Besides working 10 - 12 hours each day I enjoyed my dinners alone in my hotel room and unfortunately became quite ill and achy on my 2nd to last day in Anchorage! I ended up having to visit an urgent care on my last day to find out that in Palin's state, they did not accept my health insurance. So my doctors visit cost me $250 and then I had a strep throat culture which totaled the visit to $310. Thank you to my parents for generously helping me in a time of need! ;) I was told because of my fever, achy body, and sore throat, that I had to wear a mask. Super hot!
So my last day in Alaska, which actually was the one sunny and clear day, was spent sleeping and taking meds in my hotel room! Well, I was getting cabin fever and needed one last drive along that magnificent coast line! So At 5pm, I took my sweet rental car and drove along the Seward Highway to witness the leaves changing and the sunsetting on my last day in Alaska.
Besides the fact that my first and last day in Anchorage were filled with me being sick, it was a fantastic experience to be there to train people and to explore a land I would probably never have gone to.
I am glad to be home in my cozy apartment now. I am not so thrilled that my cozy apartment is in Ohio but.... yea... plans are a brewin'
beijos! com amor...
